So, Saturdays are the "long run" days according to the marathon plan I'm following. I was scheduled to run 8 miles last Saturday, so Jodi and I decided to see what it would be like to drive to Logan (about 40 minutes away) and see what the last 8 miles of our marathon course would be like. We took two cars so that we could park one of them at the end of the marathon and then drive up 8 miles from there. That was the plan...
We drove to the marathon's end in a nice park area a couple of blocks east of Logan's Main Street. We parked Jodi's car there and mapped-out where we'd need to drive to be 8 miles up the course. It was a little tricky, but we figured it out. We parked my car, I pocketed my key and grabbed my 72-ounce "Camelbak," and we started our run. It wasn't too difficult of a run, especially considering the course elevation map's supposed "hilliness" during the last 8 miles. By the time we were running the last 2 miles, we were tired but overall feeling quite good. We were approaching the last block of the run when I turned to Jodi and asked, "You have your keys, right?" Jodi just looked at me with wide eyes for a moment and then said, "Ohhhhh...what the heck?! I'm an idiot!" You can guess how the rest went down... You bet. :)
As my Mom says, "What doesn't kill you, makes you wish you were dead." So true, Mom. So true.
We (obviously) survived the extra miles in the heat, but it was definitely a much-longer-than-planned training session! I love my sister.

#1 Let the blogging begin!
After much deliberation, I have decided to join the world of "bloggers." Technically, I already have another blog that I started years ago, but I only posted maybe twice, and I never really took it seriously. So, here I am with a new one! Hopefully I'll maintain this one a little better.
One bit of current news for me is that I just signed-up to run (I can't believe I'm even saying this) a MARATHON. That's right, folks...a marathon. Yikes. Anyone who knows me is well aware of the fact that I used to despise running unless chasing a soccer ball or basketball. Even then, I wasn't particularly fond of running. But running just for the sake of itself always seemed insane to me until my mission when I used those 30 minutes of daily exercise time to jog circles in the parking lot of my apartment. Not terribly exciting scenery, but I gradually gained more endurance and felt great every time I ran. Also, I lost a substantial amount of weight because of running. I became happily addicted, and I've been running fairly consistently ever since.
My siblings and I wanted to run the St. George Marathon in October, but we weren't selected to do so this year since so many people sign-up to run it. Rats! So, we decided to sign-up for the "Top of Utah Marathon" in Logan, Utah instead. It's on Saturday, September 18th. Maybe we'll try for St. George in the future if this marathon doesn't slaughter us. :) The siblings involved are my older brother, Jake, and my younger sister, Jodi. My older brother, Eric, was going to join us in St. George but won't be able to make it to Logan. Next time, perhaps! We're excited about running and are already four weeks into our 16-week training program!
My goal is to use this blog as a place to record my training experience. It's important for me to keep it fun and to remember to enjoy the journey. It's a big deal that I'm even considering a marathon, to be honest, so I plan to live it up and bring you along for the wonderful ride!
